Retail Consultants in India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> <i>Financial \n                Express <br>\nNew Delhi, January 14, 2014<\/i><\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n   <div class=\"col-sm-4\">\n              <p class=\"mt-3\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.thirdeyesight.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fdi-retail-delhi.jpg\" class=\"img-fluid d-block lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-8\"><p class=\"mt-3\">In \n                what will be a big blow to global multi-brand retailers making \n                them even more wary about investing in India, the Delhi government \n                has decided not to allow them to set up outlets in the capital. \n                New Delhi accounts for a fairly large chunk of the organised retail \n                market in the country and would have been an attractive catchment \n                for any retailer.<\/p>\n              <p class=\"mt-3\">&#8220;We have written to the department of industrial policy \n                and promotion withdrawing the Delhi government&#8217;s earlier \n                consent allowing FDI in multi-brand retail,&#8221; a senior Delhi \n                government official told FE on Monday.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n              <p>The government&#8217;s policy allowing overseas retail firms to \n                pick up to a 51% stake in multi-brand retail firms in partnership \n                with Indian players requires the nod of state governments. The \n                previous Delhi government under Congress party&#8217;s Sheila Dikshit \n                had given its assent to foreign retailers setting up shop in the \n                capital. With Delhi opting out, the number of states that have \n                agreed to allow FDI in retail stands reduced to nine. So far, \n                Congress\/allies-ruled states of Maharashtra, Haryana, Manipur, \n                Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir \n                and Andhra Pradesh have given their assent.<\/p>\n              <p>Since the government threw open the multi-brand retail to FDI \n                in September, 2012, just one global player, the UK-based Tesco, \n                has said it wants to do business in India &#8212; it plans to buy \n                a 50% stake in the Tata Group&#8217;s Trent. A senior executive \n                of Tesco said such changes were anticipated and didn&#8217;t &#8220;come \n                across as a surprise&#8221;. Tesco plans to set up its first set \n                of stores in Maharashtra and Karnataka.<\/p>\n              <p><b>&#8220;Not allowing FDI in multi-brand retail in Delhi has \n                a dampening effect and reinforces the risk factor; foreign retailers \n                will wait until the general elections for further decisions,&#8221; \n                says Devangshu Dutta, CEO of Third Eyesight, who points out that \n                even after the Tesco announcement, other retailers haven&#8217;t \n                rushed in. Dutta adds that this move may result in more stores \n                in Gurgaon and Noida that can absorb some of Delhi-NCR&#8217;s \n                consumption demand.<\/b><\/p>\n              <p>&#8220;The Delhi government&#8217;s stance on FDI in multi-brand \n                retail is not too positive but nothing changes as permitting FDI \n                in multi-brand retail was always a state subject. Although Delhi \n                is a huge market, modern retail penetration has traditionally \n                not been too high in the city,&#8221; says Mohit Kampani, CEO, \n                Spencer&#8217;s Retail.<\/p>\n              <p>&#8220;This does not affect us as we are not seeking fresh foreign \n                capital,&#8221; Kampani said, adding that while Delhi is a big \n                market, the bigger chunk lies in the neighbouring suburbs of Gurgaon \n                (Haryana) and Noida (Uttar Pradesh). Cities like Bangalore and \n                Hyderabad have the highest penetration of modern retail at close \n                to 30%.<\/p>\n              <p>&#8220;We have not seen much momentum in foreign companies entering \n                India through FDI in multi-brand retail so far; so, the announcement \n                is not of importance,&#8221; Kishore Biyani, founder of Future \n                Group, said.<\/p>\n              <p>&#8220;Aam Aadmi Party strictly opposes FDI in retail because \n                if it enters into the retail sector, then crores of small-scale \n                Indian businessmen will come on the road, as they will lose their \n                business and their livelihoods.
