Snapdeal\nhas barred sellers on its platform from giving more than 70% discount\non the maximum retail price on most products from May 13, as the\necommerce firm aims to tackle the increasing return of merchandise from\nbuyers.

\nIn a communication sent to sellers on May 9, the company\nsaid: “We have noticed deeply discounted products often do not meet\nexpectations, leading to increased returns and customer\ndissatisfaction. To improve customer experience, you would not be able\nto list a new product or update the price of a listed product with more\nthan 70% discount on MRP.”

\nSellers on leading marketplaces,\nincluding Snapdeal, have been complaining of increased returns by\nbuyers due to the “no questions asked” return policy of the ecommerce\ncompanies.

\nIncreased returns is a logistical nightmare as\ninventory is stuck in transit for long time and also cause accounting\nerrors, say sellers.
\n
\nA Snapdeal spokesperson said this is a way\nto providing consumer insights and assisting the sellers in making a\nsale. “In this instance, we have shared with our sellers that any\ndiscounts that the consumers perceive as unrealistic may adversely\nimpact the consumer perception about the quality of products,” the\nspokesperson said.

\n“Laying down the operating rules on our\nmarketplace and providing market information is an ongoing activity.\nThe price is determined by the sellers based on various inputs they may\nreceive from multiple sources, including from us.”

\nAccording\nto Devangshu Dutta, chief executive of retail consultancy firm Third\nEyesight, Snapdeal’s strategy might go down well with India’s new\nforeign investment policy in ecommerce. But sellers won’t like\nit. <\/span><\/p>\n
