It has agreed to hold no more than 29.9 per cent of the total voting rights in the combined business.\n\n<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<p>\n\tPlease use the sharing tools found via the share button at the top or side of articles. But politicians queued up to question the two groups\u2019 commitment to close no stores and for no jobs to be lost.<br><br>\n\nHilary Benn, MP for Leeds Central, said the pledge did not mean there would be no redundancies in the Yorkshire city where Asda was based, while Rachel Reeves, another Leeds MP and chair of the business select committee, said staff would be \u201cincredibly concerned\u201d about their future.<br><br>\n\nRebecca Long-Bailey, shadow business secretary, said the CMA should examine the potential impact on suppliers \u201cas a matter of urgency\u201d and warned about the prospect of an \u201cemerging monopoly\u201d.<br><br>\n\nThe two groups\u2019 official position is that they do not expect to have to sell or close any stores as a result of the combination. Both brands will be maintained, as will Asda\u2019s headquarters, and price cuts of up to 10 per cent on everyday items have been promised after completion.\n<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-sm-6\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.thirdeyesight.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/http___com.ft_.imagepublish.upp-prod-eu.s3.amazonaws-3.jpg\" class=\"img-fluid lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-6\">\n<p>\nThe CMA said on Monday it was likely to review the combination and that \u201cpre-notification\u201d talks with the companies could last \u201ca number of weeks\u201d before the start of an initial \u201cPhase 1\u201d investigation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\tAnalysts were split over the prospect of enforced store disposals. \u201cThis deal could easily unravel acrimoniously if the CMA sticks to its old rules and parameters,\u201d said Bruno Monteyne at Bernstein. Patrick O\u2019Brien, research director at GlobalData, said his analysis showed at least 75 stores might need to be sold.<br><br>\n\n\u201cI would hope they have taken good legal advice,\u201d said one big shareholder in Sainsbury\u2019s. \u201cThey clearly think they will get through. You would have thought they [the companies] would have been all over this [competition concern] like a rash.\u201d<br><br>\n\nSainsbury\u2019s biggest shareholder, the Qatar Investment Authority, has publicly supported the takeover.<br><br>\n<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<p>The deal marks an ambitious attempt to reshape the UK retail market, in which the traditional big four retailers \u2014 Tesco, Sainsbury\u2019s, Asda and Wm Morrison \u2014 have come under pressure from German discount chains Lidl and Aldi in food, and from homegrown rivals along with internet retailers such as Amazon in general merchandise.<br><br>\n\nBased on their market shares, the combination of Sainsbury\u2019s and Asda would control almost a third of the UK grocery market, putting it ahead of Tesco. The combined business will be chaired by Sainsbury\u2019s chairman David Tyler and led by its chief executive Mike Coupe and chief financial officer Kevin O\u2019Byrne. Asda will continue to be run from Leeds, with its own chief executive.<br><br>\n\nThe transaction also reflects a rethink of UK strategy on the part of Walmart, which bought Asda for \u00a36.7bn in 1999.<br><br>\n\n\u201cWe\u2019ve been clear that we are going to be thoughtful and look at different ways of operating internationally. Underlying pre-tax profit for the year to March 10 was \u00a3589m, with the total dividend lifted 8 per cent to 10.2p. Profit expectations for 2018-19 were \u00a3629m, in line with current consensus forecasts.<br><br>\n\nIt said the integration of Argos, acquired in 2016, was ahead of plan, with 280 Argos stores expected to be open in Sainsbury\u2019s by the end of the current financial year, against a plan of 250.
